Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

75% of Anovulatory Women are PCOS

It is a number one reason of infertility among women at the child bearing age. If the patient has irregular or absent menstrual periods, clues from the physical examination is considered next. Her height and weight is noted along with any increase in facial or body hair or loss of scalp hair, acne and acanthosis nigricans (a discoloration of the skin under the arms, breasts and in the groin). Elevated androgen levels favour the diagnoses. A fasting insulin and glucose level will be obtained. The level over 10miu/mL on a fasting blood sample suggests that PCOS treatment in india may be related to hyperinsulinemia(elevated fasting blood insulin levels) . For women in the reproductive age range, PCOS is a serious, common cause of infertility. 75% of anovulatory women are PCOS.

After medication, generally the woman ovulates spontaneously or if necessary, ovulation can be triggered by using suitable drugs.

One of the major biochemical features of PCOS treatment is insulin resistance accompanied by compensatory hyperinsulinemia. Recently promising new treatment options have become available. Exercise, diet control, weight reduction and life style alterations are advised. Dietary management includes foods rich in phytoestrogens, antioxidants and D-chiro inositol

    Suggested Foods for PCOS Woman

The medication has been shown to reverse the endocrine abnormalities seen with polycystic ovary syndrome within two or three months. Foods rich in phytoestrogens are recommended.

    • Garlic, parsley, chick peas(black grams)
    • Whole grains like- soybeans, wheat
    • Vegetables like- beans, karela, fenugreek (methi), carrot (particularly raw), potatoes, amla
    • Fruits like- date, pomegranates, cherries, jamun and apples
    • Herbs like- red clove, neem leaves, turmeric and verbena,
    • Isoflavonoids like- onions, garlic, soybean, clover (long) and black grams.
    • Lignans like linseed oil.

Consumption of a phytoestrogen rich diet ameliorates estrogen-deficiency. Concentrated isoflavone (soybean is a richest source) extracts are being highly promoted. Tablelized soya proteins are available in the market.

    Treatment

Phytoestrogens rich foods result in decreased hair loss, diminished facial and body hair growth, normalization of elevated blood pressure, regulation of menstrual periods, weight loss and normal fecundity. Pregnancy may result in less than three months. By six months over 90% of women treated with insulin-lowering agents will resume regular menses.

Laparoscopic ovarian drilling may be considered for those women where other indications for laparoscopy are present. Many who failed to ovulate with medication will respond when rechallenged with these medicines after ovarian drilling. Interestingly women, who are smokers, rarely respond to the drilling procedure.
